BioSIM Welcomes New PhD Student, João Silva

BioSIM welcomes a new visiting PhD student, João P. B. Silva, from the Biomedicina PhD Program from the University of Beira Interior (UBI). João Silva earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degree in Biotechnology from UBI in 2020 and 2023, respectively. Currently, he is a PhD student in the Biomedicine PhD program in UBI.

His projects focal point is the discovery of novel prostate cancer therapeutic approaches, and is focused on the inhibition of the STEAP family of membrane proteins. Entitled “In silico and in vitro Bioactivity Evaluation of Novel STEAP1 Antagonists for Prostate Cancer”, the goal is to discover small drug molecules that can selectively and effectively bind to STEAP1’s binding sites and inhibit its metaloredutase function.”

This work is being developed under the supervision of Prof. Luís Passarinha (UCIBIO/BTP), and co-supervision of Prof. Ângela Sousa (CICS-UBI) and Prof. Sérgio Sousa (FMUP/BioSIM).
