Many congratulations to Vanda Peixoto for successfully defending his PhD thesis in Advanced Biotechnology (University of Vigo, Spain) with the title “Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria: Unravelling epidemiological patterns, molecular mechanisms and biotechnological advances” (14th June, Vigo). Vanda’s PhD thesis was developed under the supervision of Mónica Almeida (ESS) and Sérgio Sousa (FMUP/BioSIM).
This thesis work provided new insights into this rare disease, including pathophysiology, symptoms, clonal evolution, gene mutation, genetic polymorphisms, case reports, adverse effects to treatment, resistance to treatments and new therapeutic alternatives. The computational studies and simulations were developed at BioSIM, Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, under the supervision of Sérgio Sousa. The focus of the computational studies was the molecular interaction dynamics between the monoclonal antibody used in this disease treatment, and its biological target and the different response in patients with associated polymorphisms.
