BioSIM welcomes New Visiting PhD Student, Andreia Machado

BioSIM welcomes a new visiting PhD student, Andreia Machado Brito-da-Costa, from the PhD Program in Biomedical Sciences from the University Institute of Health Sciences (IUCS), CESPU (Portugal).

Andreia has a BSc degree in Applied Biology from the University of Minho (Portugal) and a MSc degree in Forensic Sciences and Laboratory Techniques from IUCS (Portugal).

Andreia is currently developing her scientific work at TOXRUN-Toxicology Research Unit (https://toxrun.iucs.cespu.pt) and at the Laboratory of Toxicology (FFUP) – UCIBIO-Applied Molecular Biosciences Unit (https://ucibio.pt) & i4HB-Institute for Health and Bioeconomy, holding a PhD scholarship from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT-MCTES).

The focus of Andreia’s PhD Project is the elucidation of the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and toxicity of hallucinogens, with an emphasis on psilocybin and psilocin. This work is being carried out under supervision of Dr Áurea Carvalho (REQUIMTE/LAQV), Dr Diana Dias da Silva (UCIBIO/i4HB) and Dr Ricardo Dinis Oliveira (TOXRUN-IUCS, FMUP).

Her mobility period at BioSIM will involve the application of docking to evaluate the interaction of hallucinogens with enzymes of the cytochrome P450 complex.
